Welcome to Monroe Elementary School!
I have been very proud to serve as the principal at Monroe since the 2014-15 school year! Everyday, I look forward to working with the great staff, awesome students and supportive parents that make Monroe the wonderful place that it is.
Originally from the St. Louis, Missouri area, I moved to Minnesota to attend Bethel University and graduated with a teaching degree in Elementary Education. I began my career teaching 5th grade for two years in Spring Lake Park Schools and 6th grade for five years in Robbinsdale Schools. During that time, I attended Saint Mary’s University to obtain my Master’s Degree and Principal’s license. I then spent a combined seven years as an administrator in Robbinsdale and Bloomington schools before starting at Monroe in the 2014-15 school year.
When not at school, I enjoy being with my family, spending time outside and playing/watching sports. My wife, Kim, was an elementary PE teacher for almost 20 years before she stepped away from the profession to be at home more and pursue other opportunities. We have two daughters, Chloe and Elsie. Chloe enjoys playing volleyball and being active in theater. Elsie enjoys playing volleyball and basketball. We love to get outside to ride bikes, visit parks throughout the state, and go to Valleyfair.
At Monroe, our staff members are committed to meeting the needs of all students by assuring learning excellence and readiness for a changing world. We are able to do this through getting to know each student’s strengths and needs. We then work collaboratively to help students grow and find ways to challenge them.
We hope that you have a great school year! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, delights, concerns or ideas. You may stop in the office, email me at sjohan1@isd77.org or call 507-387-7889. I look forward to working with you and helping your student have a successful year.
Sincerely,
Steve Johanson
